How to Catch a Trophy Zander!
You spot a big fish on live sonar. Now it’s time to put your lure in the right place and hope that zander hasn’t just turned up to inspect your electronics.
We’re putting together a complete tackle setup for targeting big zander on Lake Võrtsjärv, with a rod, reel and rig selected to work together.
The rod
Sensitive enough to feel the lure and detect subtle takes, with enough backbone to set the hook firmly. Its casting range should match the combined weight of the lure and jig head. A big zander deserves more than a warm welcome and crossed fingers.
The reel and braided line
A smooth-running reel with a precisely adjustable drag, sized to balance the rod. Braided line helps maintain contact with the lure and transmit bites. When the fish finally opens its mouth, the message needs to reach the angler too.
The fluorocarbon leader
An abrasion-resistant connection between the braid and the lure. We’ll choose the diameter to suit the lure size and fishing conditions, balancing strength with freedom of movement.
The lures
A selection of larger-profile soft baits in different colours and with different actions. This lets you offer anything from a slow, subtle presentation to a more active bait. A bigger lure doesn’t guarantee a bigger fish, but it does put a proper meal on the menu.
The weights and rigging components
Jig heads or weights in several sizes, along with suitable hooks and connectors. Choose the weight according to depth, wind, boat movement and lure size, so the bait reaches the fish and stays in the intended part of the water column. The idea is to put dinner in front of the zander, not drop it on its head.
One coordinated setup: rod, reel, braid, fluorocarbon leader, lures, weights and the necessary connectors.
You find the fish. The tackle helps deliver the offer. The zander still has the final say.
